Why connect two wifi routers?
To use a wifi router, you generally need to connect it to a local network. In some situations, however, it may be useful to connect two routers to the same local network. This can improve the quality of the connection, for example. This process allows you to extend the signal range. Using two routers simultaneously also allows you to connect a wired device placed far from the main router. This option is also useful for creating a subnet for a specific use, without preventing other users from enjoying a good connection quality.
How to connect two wifi routers?
There are several techniques for establishing a connection between two WiFi routers on the same ADSL network.
The technique of parallel connection of wifi routers
The parallel connection allows you to offer two nearby networks. The main router, that is to say, the one directly connected to the ADSL line, generates the first main network. The secondary router (the one serving as a relay) offers an extension of this main network. The connected devices will be present on two different networks while allowing you to browse the Internet without any problem as if each of them were connected to a single local network. The connection between the two routers is necessary using an Ethernet cable.
Cascading wifi routers
This connection approach is almost identical to the first one. A cascade connection differs from a parallel connection because the secondary router creates a different subnet from the network created by the primary router. Unlike parallel connection, machines connected to both routers will therefore not be able to see each other unless they are connected to the same device. However, the connection between the two routers via Ethernet cable is necessary.
Connection according to the repeater mode of wifi routers
With repeater mode, the second router acts as a relay point to amplify the signal from the main router. It therefore acts as a range extender. This configuration is suitable for wireless networking and requires that the secondary router offers a signal at least 50% of its strength. The connection between the two routers is established via a wireless signal. However, few routers have repeater mode. For each of these three connection modes, there is a configuration specific to each router to be done. In addition, there may be interference between the routers.
