How to Start Freelancing with No Experience

Working for yourself, freelancing opens up a world of opportunities to create just the projects you want and those on your schedule. The truth is that many aspiring freelancers are fearful of not having any experience. At the same time, it’s possible to succeed with a freelancing career, even without any previous experience, if you’re determined and ready to work to achieve it. To get you off on the right foot, this guide will show you how to build your career by starting freelancing with no experience.

Before you dive into freelancing, consider what skills you already have and what interests you have. If you don’t have formal work experience, you probably have some skills you already possess through hobbies, education, or previous jobs. Imagine what areas you can offer your service, whether in writing, graphic design, social media management, or web development. Freelancing is all about passion and dedication, so start with things you are excellent at and enjoy.

Build a Portfolio

Proving your capabilities to clients when you’re new to freelancing is one of your first challenges. A portfolio is created to overcome this. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have previous client work to make a portfolio. Instead, use mock projects or work on personal projects that show how good you are. If you’re a writer, for example, write blog posts or articles about topics you are well versed in. If you’re a designer, make sample websites or logos. A well-crafted portfolio is useful to attract clients and let them know you are professional and capable of your job.

Create Accounts on Freelance Platforms

If you want to start earning money via writing, freelance platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer are amazingly awesome places to begin hunting for clients. On these platforms, freelancers connect with businesses and individuals searching for these services. These sites are where you want to have a presence, and although it’ll be about your projects and any personal experience you might have, it’s nice to have a professional profile there as well. Communicate your services clearly and be clear about the difference you make. By starting on these platforms, you can get exposure to many clients and build up your freelancing reputation.

Have Free or Discounted Services

But when you’re new to the business and still aren’t too seasoned yet at running it, offering free or discounted services is a great way to create your portfolio while getting testimonials. Contact local companies, close friends, and neighbours, and ask them for feedback after doing something for them in exchange for a review or offer your services as a review or feedback. You don’t want to work for free forever, but this approach helps you build confidence and improve your skills. Once you’ve worked on some completed projects and had a couple of reviews, you can start charging for your services and attracting higher-paying clients.

Learn How to Market Yourself

If you haven’t experience freelancing, you’ll have to do extra to market yourself. Personal Branding helps us stand out in a mostly crowded market. First, build a professional website or blog where you can show your work and share some insights on what you are working on. Social media is a means of promoting your work, gaining potential clients and talking to them about relevant issues. It’s particularly handy for professional networking and for getting freelance work. Moreover, sign up for online forums or groups about your business to connect with other freelancers and perhaps potential clients.

Be Continuously Developing Your Skills

Keeping up with industry trends and continuously improving your skills is one of the most important aspects of freelancing. Starting freelancing without experience doesn’t mean you can’t quickly hone in on your skill set. Learn new skills, stay updated, take online courses, watch tutorials, read blogs, and listen to podcasts. Coursera, Udemy and Skillshare provide affordable courses that will help you increase your knowledge. The more skilled you are, the more you’ll have the confidence to take on some of the new projects.

Be Patient and Persistent

Patience and persistence are key to freelancing, especially when you are new. You will probably get rejected or struggle to find clients, but don’t let that discourage you. At some point, we’re all newly green freelancers and call this having zero experience. The successful ones keep at it. Get on building a freelancing career and realize it takes time. Keep applying to projects, improving your portfolio, and improving your skills. Your persistence eventually pays off as you lose money, land clients, and build your business.

Build and Network Relations

Freelancing success is dependent on networking. Build strong relationships with your clients as you start working with them. They will want to give you to their friends and trust you to perform their future projects. To expand your network, attend local networking events, JOIN online communities and engage with fellow freelancers. The easier it becomes to find freelance opportunities, the more connections you have. Having a word-of-mouth reputation can help you catch clients when you’re still starting.

Conclusion

But starting with no experience when you start freelancing doesn’t seem easy until you do it correctly. Lack of experience does not have to act as an obstacle to either getting you or building a career as a freelancer: by finding out what you can do, creating a solid portfolio, advertising yourself, and being persistent, you can. Every expert freelancer once started where you are, so remember that. You have to be dedicated and ready to learn to be a good freelancer and be the taste of freedom and flexibility.
